Statement

I enjoy the thrill of finding visual ideas within an otherwise unassuming image. Design at work, in such an eloquent way, can become unnoticeable. But without it, the image would fall apart. It’s a wonderful thing to sit out and find an arch made of light, stretching across a triangular tree then by continuation it reemerges within the contour of the road. Or, the way the human body can flow into the bedding like a Rubens. In painting, I love the dance between subject and application, or a surface being fat or lean depending on color or spatial aspects. Or the way our physiological processes work hard to define something without definition. I pull from life, be it visual or in response to the emerging image.

It gives me great pleasure to draw. The process of taking it in. These moments happening, and passing. And all we do is stand and admire the light, the form, the layered details of life. We wonder how we don't spend more time just looking and breathing. I love the weight of the material in my hand and the smooth surface waiting for me to re-express something modest yet magical. My work aims to create visual experiences that reward the patient viewer with fresh discoveries. The work is meant to be representational and not illustrative – descriptive without literalism.
